🏃‍♂️ Why In-Season Speed Training Is a Game-Changer (and Why You Shouldn’t Stop Just Because Games Start)

When the season kicks off, most athletes and parents assume it’s time to hit pause on extra training — especially speed work.

But here’s the truth:
In-season speed training is one of the smartest, most effective ways to stay sharp, prevent injury, and stand out on game day.

Here’s why continuing to train during the season is a must — and how our Speed Academy can help.

🧠 1. Speed Declines Without Maintenance

Speed is one of the most trainable — and losable — qualities in sports. It takes 5-7 days to lose your speed progress. So that means if you are not hitting 90-95% of your top speed in sprints every week you will get slower.

Game play alone doesn’t provide the specific volume or intensity to maintain sprint technique, acceleration mechanics, or explosiveness. You may think you are running at top speed but often times it is only 80% speed. So, if you're not actively working on it, your speed will slowly fade throughout the season.

🦵 2. Injury Prevention Starts with Smart Training

As game loads increase, so does the risk of injury — especially soft-tissue injuries like hamstring strains.

Our in-season speed sessions:

  • Focus on short, high-quality reps (low fatigue, high output)

  • Reinforce proper sprint technique and posture

  • Keep hamstrings, hips, and glutes strong and explosive

This reduces injury risk and keeps athletes on the field. Speed training is not meant to be exhaustive but specific and intentional to improve without over doing it.

🧩 3. It Fills the Gaps Your Team Practice Misses

Team practices are focused on tactics, conditioning, and plays — not individual speed development.

Our sessions focus on:

  • Acceleration and change of direction mechanics

  • Linear sprint form

  • Individual weaknesses or asymmetries

So your athlete keeps developing, not just surviving.

⏱ 4. It Doesn’t Take Much

Just 1 session per week is enough to maintain — or even improve — top-end speed during the season.

Our in-season sessions are:

  • 45–60 minutes

  • Low-volume but high-intensity

  • Designed to enhance, not interfere with, practices and games

🔥 5. It Builds Confidence

There’s something powerful about knowing you're staying sharp while others are losing their edge.

Athletes who train in-season stay confident, explosive, and ready to make game-changing plays — even late in the season when others are slowing down.
